YOUNGSTER SCOOPS FISTFUL OF AWARDS [23/10/08 11:28:43]
One of Abberton's most promising youngsters made off with a number of awards at the club's annual Dinner & Dance on Saturday evening. The event was staged for the first time at Lexden Wood Golf Club and the new arrangements were voted a success by the 61-strong attendance.
Fifteen-year-old all-rounder Tom Sawdon (pictured right) capped a fine first season in senior cricket by grabbing the 3rd XI bowling award and, perhaps not surprisingly, won the same category in the Colts section. He also took the Most Improved Player trophy and was the first Abberton recipient of a Jack Petchey Foundation award for consuming the most post-match sausages.
Ryan Savill was another multi-trophy winner, lifting the 1st XI bowling award as well as being voted the most consistent player in that team, this despite possessing one of the most effeminate bowling actions in local cricket.
The 2nd XI player of the year was Daniel Woodrow with teenager Danny White claiming the honour for the 3rd team and Chris Pettit being top dog in the Colts section.
The cups and plaques were presented by Lisa Rose, Partner of Harrison Rose Accounting, a new major sponsor that the club has welcomed for the 2008 season. She bravely managed to cope with kissing some fairly unpleasant beasts during her marathon handover session but hopefullly this will not have fouled our chances of her support next year!
The evening, organised in the main by Marc Fox, enjoyed the superb and varied musical offerings of "Smartie" and he must have been good as even John Everett stayed until the end!
As the guests prepared to leave, Ryan Savill looked out of the window and excitedly revealed that we had just missed a huge hailstorm with hundreds of golf ball size hailstones outside on the grass. Strange that they were only to the rear of the building!
