NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR VILLAGE PUB WAS WELL OVERDUE [14/08/09 07:25:11]

After many years spent unwisely distancing itself from the local populus by attracting the very flotsam of society with its irritating fruitmachines and a pool table entertaining a wide range of ne'er-do-wells, the Langenhoe Lion looks as though it has placed itself back on the map as an establishment offering quality food and decent beers in a convivial atmosphere.

The landmark building siutated at the Abberton and Langenhoe village crossroads (pictured right) has undergone a degree of refurbishment involving the removal of the items above which were found offensive to so many. However, it is the advances on the food and drink front that will be of most interest to both local residents and those passing through. With its prime location on the main drag from Colchester to the Inbred Isle of Mersea, several highly-respected individuals are confident in predicting a boom in trade for the 'sleeping' Lion.

New owner and Head Chef Shaun Haigh has taken a gamble with a long lease from the Greene King brewery and the Lion is now a Free House offering regional cask ales which will certainly please the area's beer drinkers.

Gone is the pathetically meagre microwave menu that has become the staple offering of so many outlets over the years. In its place is a throughfully-created and frequently changing carte-du-jour making use of both local and home grown produce and including meats from the very popular Wick Farm in Layer and the best of the daily catch from the Mersea fishing boats.

Several of the ADCC's burgenoing lunching club have already sampled the Lion's new fare, the special set menu offering particularly impressive value for money. Club Treasurer John Everett (very nearly 68) told the website, "I am excited by the new regime at the Lion and am looking forward to the pleasant half mile stroll before sampling their guest ales."

A successful Curry Night has also been staged with a Quiz taking place next week. On bank holiday Monday there is a charity tug-of-war competition in aid of Help for Heroes.
