NEW ENTRANTS FOR 5 RUN CHALLENGE [07/09/09 13:19:44]
As the season draws to a close, several have decided to throw their hat into the ring in a last dicth effort to win the 5 Run Challenge. However, the latest batch of entrants (perhaps not surprisingly in some cases) failed to make it into the top three in the main competition although a couple now feature in the higher places of the Handicap.
Near perfect conditions were experienced at The Brow last night with barely a breath of wind and pleasant, dry conditions underfoot but the stranglehold on the best time was not seriously challenged, although a few of the contestants considered that they "might do better next week" and a number of the observers could be heard expressing considerable confidence that they could take the crown.
Sadly there were quite a few non-runners and one individual turned down the invitation to participate by responding "Am I f***" when asked he if would be making a challenge.
With the only three weeks of the season left and the competition leader having recently bettered his 'official' time in midweek trials, it remains to be seen whether there will be a new champion emertging from the pack.
Our picture above captures the breathless aftermath of Sunday's challenges with the competitors in various states of distress after their strenuous exertion. Pictured from left to right are Daniel Woodrow (a very brave effort indeed and not the worst!), Dave Digby, Junior Whitfield (prostrate) Chris Pettit (currently in second position) and Phil Lingard.
Digby was philosophical about his own performance - "My trouble is that I don't get any much opportunity to run out in the middle because I keep getting out for a duck" he explained with a degree of exasperation. However, he went on to add "I knew I would beat Aaron Trussler though!".
