Ground
The club moved to it’s present site in 1954 when it was recognized that a more permanent home was needed. This was provided by local farmer, LG Evans, initially on a leasehold agreement. He later sold the ground to the club for the princely sum of £200.
Initially, the clubhouse was no more than an asbestos clad shed, but in 1974 members decided to add a bar to the facilities courtesy of a small interest free loan from Greene King and this addition certainly improved finances dramatically!
During the close season of 1979/80, new changing facilities and toilets were built at a cost of £14,000. Apart from a £4,000 loan from a local farmer and grants from the Sports Council and Colchester Borough Council totaling £1,700, all costs were met by club funds.
In 1982 the old clubhouse was demolished and a new structure was added to the already impressive changing rooms. With the aid of a £7,000 grant from the Lottery, outdoor practice nets were installed in 2000.
The latest major addition to the facilities came in 2005 when an electronic scoreboard was installed in the north west corner.
In July 2007 the old roller, which had been a wonderful servant for many years, was replaced by a sparkling refurbished machine at a cost of £10,500. Nearly 50% of the cost was met by a very generous donation from The Baxter Foundation. Later that year the practice facilities were relaid at a cost of £6,000.
During the 2008 season it became obvious that the square had become very tired and, following various soil tests, it was concluded that the square should be dug up and relaid. Contractors came on site at the end of the season and the work was carried out at a cost of £2,750. RC
