Ladies Match Reports
Saturday 1 August
Abberton Ladies went to the county ground at Chelmsford for finals day hoping to win the trophy they won last season. In the semi final they were up against Woodham Mortimer who won the toss and choose to bat first. After losing Grace Melhuish for 3 to Hannah Jeffrey, Laura Thorogood and Victoria Brown began to score steadily, After Laura reached her retirement (28) scoring slowed down with good bowling by all Abberton's bowlers. Hannah Jeffrey being the pick of them finishing with 4-9 off her four overs. Woodham managed to reach 74-7 after 20 overs.
Abberton got off to a poor start losing Jo Sibley in the first over, But Sue Theobald and Amy Finbow began to increase the tempo and the runs began to flow, both were out when the score was in the 30s but Helen Barnes (25 retired) and Michelle Snow 13* saw Abberton home comfortably by six wickets with five over’s to spare.

In the other semi-final Kelvedon beat Colchester by 8 wickets.
So Abberton took on Kelvedon in the final in a match reduced to 15 overs a side due to the predicted rain, which duly arrived five mins after the end of the games. Kelvedon won toss and asked Abberton to bat first, they got off to a really slow start with only five runs coming off the first three overs, but eventually they found runs easier to come by and they reached 82-4 off their allotted overs with Hannah Jeffrey reaching retirement (25) supported by good knocks from Sue Theobald 15 and Helen Barnes 18. H Cortrell's three overs went for only six runs.
Although Abberton took a wicket in the first over the strong Kelvedon side were able to score easily at the required six an over rate. With Beth Wild (20) and Bryony Butcher (26 retired) putting on 40 for the 2nd wicket in 5 overs, Abberton were always up against it although all the bowlers gave it their best. Kelvedon eventually ran out winners and worthy champions for their first time.

Friday 10 July
Abberton visited the Castle Park knowing they needed one point to clinch the league title for the second year running. Asked to bat first by Colchester, they got off to a very poor start losing Sue Theobald, Michelle Snow, Hannah Jeffery and Amy Finbow with only 26 runs scored in the wake of tidy bowling by Kara Toleman (2-19) and Nat Samaranayake (3-20).
Helen Barnes and Hannah Porter set about rebuilding the innings with some clever running and big hitting, both reaching retirement. Minal Patel was removed cheaply, but a fine stand of 21 between Alice Parker and Gemma Warsop saw Abberton reach a total of 107-5 off their 20 overs.
In reply, Colchester got off to an imnpressive start scoring at around six an over with both openers Toleman and Samaranayake scoring 25. Abberton's bowlers were finding it difficult to take wickets but managed to slow down the scoring rate with accurate bowling and there were helpful contributions by Zoe Gould and Rachel Snow to build up the pressure.
Stella Layzell and Lorraine Heartly batted sensibly before the latter was removed by Minal Patel. Nine runs were needed off the final over which was bowled by Hannah Jeffery, but with Layzell having to retire with four balls left and Liz Artindale being bowled next ball, the target was just too much leaving Abberton winners by four runs and league champions again.
Both Abberton and Colchester (who were runners up) will play in a finals day at County Ground, Chelmsford on Saturday 1st August against the winners and runners up from the South Essex league: 1030 Kelvedon v Colchester, 1300 Abberton v Woodham Mortimer with the Final at 1700. All support welcome as the Ladies try to win this trophy as well.
Maxine (captain) would like to thank all the Abberton members for the pitch and bar and also to the Ladies for their help and achievement throughtout the season. Maxine/Steve Harris
Friday 3 July
Abberton entertained a strong Sudbury side looking to maintain their unbeaten record for the season.
Abbs batted first and made a poor start losing their two openers early but Michelle Snow and Hannah Jeffery got the innings back on track. Jeffery being bowled out on an unlucky 13, making this her first time she has been dismissed this season. Snow and Amy Finbow (Tango girl) both reached retirement aided by good partnerships with Alice Parker (making her Abberton debut) and Minal Patel saw Abberton reach 106-3 at the close of their innings. Lizzie Philp being Sudburys only wicket taker with 3-20 off four overs.
Sudbury also started poorly by also losing both openers cheaply. The partnership of Lucy Philp and Penny Everitt started to challenge the Abbs score until a superb one-handed catch from Hannah Jeffery fielding in close (which was either pure genius or sheer luck) removed the dangerous Philp allowing Abbertons accurate bowlers to get back on top. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Sudbury eventually finished on 77-8 leaving Abberton victors by 29 runs. Skipper Maxine Harris was carried off towards the end by a number of strong individuals with a damaged calf, making her seriously doubtful for finals day at Lord's at the end of the month. DH
