In one of the most insane challenges ever issued at The Brow, Andy 'Sparky' Lockyer (pictured top) has thrown down the gauntlet to the club's most celebrated cross-batters (not crossdressers - that's Swinny) by stating that he will hit more boundary sixes in the 2009 season!
If we ignore the fact that Sparky's form with the willow has not been terribly 'sparkling' over the last couple of years when it has often taken him at least four innings to score six runs not allowed bash a six, his choice of opponent is strange. Whilst not being strictly a batting purist and one who generally accumulates 90% of his runs on the leg side, Jonners (bottom right) does give the bat the 'full arc' and can surely be relied upon to clear the rope on several occasions during the summer.
Reportedly there is £1000 purse for the winner but one local bookmaker is not offering odds on the competition, commenting "barring Mr Johnson being struck down with bubonic plague, I can't see him losing and, even if he was, I would still favour a no-score draw."
The match includes all official Abberton and Whalebone fixtures and regular reports of the scoreline will appear on the website.
